Hiking Equipment

There are certain pieces of hiking equipment that are essential for safe hiking in the countryside. The following equipment list should form part of your travel pack especially if you are to be hiking in remote areas:

Hiking in the hills

  • Compass
  • OS Map
  • High energy food
  • Water
  • Extra clothing (lots of layers)
  • Rain coat
  • Sunglasses
  • Sun cream
  • Matches or lighter
  • Torch (with batteries)
  • Pocket knife
  • First aid kit
  • Mobile phone

It is also important that you inform someone where you will be hiking and the estimated time that you will return. Remember, that in many remote areas mobile phone network reception is patchy and cannot be relied upon to get you out of trouble.
