Hiking calories....

Hiking food

A guide to hiking calories - good nutrition is very important during hiking trips to fuel the physical activity and to keep you warm. It also provides essential nutrients which are not produced by the body for example, minerals, vitamins, certain fatty acids and amino acids. The energy the body takes in from food is measured in calories.

Prior to commencing a hiking trip it is important to ensure that food supplies that you take with you are high in calories in order to meet these requirements and to provide the additional energy needed.

The schedule below provides the general ranges required to maintain the bodies increased activity levels in different seasons and at different exercise levels:

  • Basic metabolism: 1,500 to 2,000 calories
  • Three season backpacking or normal exercise output: 2,500 to 3,000
  • Cold weather backpacking or strenuous output: 3,500 to 4,000
  • Winter backpacking or very strenuous output: 4,500 to 6,000
