The camp stove
Finding the right camp stove when there are so many on offer in stores and on the internet can seem very daunting. The narrative below will help you understand the many sub-groups of stoves and cookers on the market:
Single burner stoves – as the name suggests these stoves have a single flame and are thus capable of cooking only one item at a time. This can make meals extremely limiting and time consuming. This type of stove is ok for a single camper or where weight is an issue.
Multi burner stoves: – these types of stoves allow various items to be cooked simultaneously makings meals more interesting and preparation time quicker. If the stove is to be used to cook for several people then this type of cooker should be the obvious choice. Bear in mind that these types of stoves, along with the gas canister, will be heavy and take up a lot of space in your car.
Multi burner stoves with additional features: – additional features which may be useful are toasters, grills, a wind shield (especially useful as it prevents the flame blowing out), push button ignition (to prevent having to find matches) and adjustable flame (so you don't burn everything!).
Fuel: – most larger stoves use butane although propane is popular. Make sure you buy a stove which uses fuel which can be easily purchased wherever you are intending to camp, either at home or abroad.
